Optimum ignition parameters are determined from dynamometer tests conducted on an M151 military engine equipped with a programmable capacitor discharge ignition system and compared to a standard military ignition system. A capacitive discharge ignition system is then designed to meet the selected ignition parameters with the purpose of producing an ignition system which is maintenance-free for the life of the vehicle. Vehicle life is defined as 50,000 miles or 35000 hours of engine operation. Data collected during testing are used to show the difference in performance of the two types of ignition systems. The effects of spark energy, spark duration, voltage rise-time and peak power are discussed. Twelve sample ignition systems with optimized ignition characteristics are constructed, functionally tested and delivered to USATACOM for further life tests.
